Engagement: an Expensive Proposition

Meeting the person of your dreams wasn’t easy. Maybe you spent decades looking, and doing something akin to a combination of waiting for a bus and solving an algebra equation. But here they are, and now it’s time to start your new life together. Of course, once the rings are on the fingers, everything is going to change. Between the fact that you now have to consult with someone else when you want to make a significant financial decision to the part where your incomes have to combine into a single everything (vacation, home, retirement…), if thinking about it makes you want to stop the whole thing and be single for life, just relax.

The good news is, you now have someone who is willing to help you with all of your decisions. While you and your soon to be spouse aren’t always going to see eye to eye on every issue, what you will do is have the important conversations. At some point you won’t have any other choice in the matter. Between the two of you, you’ll come up with some great ideas. One easy idea you can start on right now is avoiding going into debt before the wedding happens by saving up for it.

Now, ideally you would already have tens of thousands of dollars saved up for your wedding before you ever even popped the question. But that’s water under the bridge now. At this point, you will have to save aggressively and as a team to scrape together the kind of cash necessary for most people’s kind of wedding. Consider this your first campaign as a team.
